Dr. Mona Nemer is a leading expert in the field of molecular genetics and cardiac regeneration. She is the current Chief Science Advisor of Canada, a position she has held since September 2017.
Prior to her appointment as CSA, Dr. Nemer served as the Vice-President of Research at the University of Ottawa for 11 years. She is also the founder and former Director of the University of Ottawa's Molecular Genetics and Cardiac Regeneration Laboratory. Dr. Nemer's research has focused on the development of diagnostic tests for heart failure and the genetics of cardiac birth defects.
Dr. Nemer is a strong advocate for science education and public communication of science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has received numerous awards for her research and leadership, including the Order of Canada and the Prix du Québec pour la recherche en sciences naturelles et en génie (Quebec Prize for Research in Natural Sciences and Engineering).
In her role as CSA, Dr. Nemer has worked to champion a number of important science policy issues, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. She is a strong believer in the importance of science for informing government policy and for driving innovation and economic growth.
